Commonly requested proposal attachments

In a previous post, I talked about the kinds of information you should have in your foundation or corporate grant proposal toolkit. Today, I'd like to share a list of commonly requested grant proposal attachments.

As we know, a stellar grant proposal narrative provides potential funders with quantitative and qualitative details about your nonprofit, and a solid picture of your organization's mission, goals and objectives. Attachments also help to tell your org's story.

Just as with proposal narrative guidelines, every funder varies in its attachment requests. So, while the below list is pretty detailed, chances are that you'll come across funders who want to see 1. more, 2. fewer or 3. altogether different attachments!

Commonly requested grant proposal attachments:

  • 501(c)(3) tax exempt status letter from the IRS
  • Your organization's current operating budget
  • Program budget: If applying for program/project-specific funds
  • Board of trustees list: Some funders want to see names only, while others want to see each board member's business affiliations and number of years on your board.
  • Form W-9 for organizations that hire contractors
  • Audited financial reports for the past three fiscal years: Often contains a balance sheet, board list, executive staff, revenue resources, etc.
  • Organization's annual report, if one exists
  • Organizational chart
  • Letters of support, endorsement or collaboration from program participants, community partners, your organization's leadership/etc.
  • Number of full-time, part-time and volunteer staff at your organization.
Start gathering these attachments now, before you're faced with an imminent submission deadline.  It will save you time and spare you stress later.  I promise!
